Dan and all,
I agree that making a good impression is very subjective. What one
person sees as "mistreatment" another sees as "interacting with their
dog."
I have heard about people getting upset when a person gave a leash
correction. Someone got very angry with me upon seeing me give my dog
a click and a treat at the corner. They were of the mindset that food
is bad for a dog who is working and in their eyes I was acting very
irresponsibly. To me, it's just how I work with my dogs. As for the
ID issue, they are worth as much as the paper they're printed on. I
can go into Kinkos and make up and ID which is as professional looking
as that issued by any program. It would probably make my life easier
if I did, at least in some respects. When handlers go around flashing
their ID to make it easier for them, it gives the business owner the
idea that they have the right to ask for one from the next handler and
that they should expect the handler to provide said documentation upon
request. I've had to disabuse many business owners of this notion.
When people flash that ID, they may be making it easier for
themselves, but they make it harder for the next person coming after
you. They are also sending a message that asking and expecting the
next handler to provide this documentation is perfectly legal and
acceptable.
Also, an abusive person can have ID and fill out vet reports to their
hearts content. That proves nothing except that they're good at
filling out forms. If I'm beating up my dog, I'm hardly going to
admit that on the vet form.
