[nagdu] First cane walk!

Yes, I can see where collapsing would be very handy, such as in cars or a
plane (...just how DOES one fly on a plane with a long ridged cane? Do they
stick it in their closet or what?). And having it close up on you at a
critical moment would be so scary! I can just see myself at this one corner
in our town, where huge grain trucks and semis swing around this corner,
unable to see what is ahead. They go very fast, and often dont really care
how close they come to clipping people or cars. There is also a train track
right there, so its *not* a nice place to be at all. And no, not been down
there with my cane yet....thats much more of a hike than I am up to yet. I
have my 'Around Our Block and Live To Tell The Tell' walk ahead of me yet
<silly grin>. If I have to try to train myself, might as well have fun with
it!

Gail and her "Very Long Toe",(as one of my kids called it!)

I have a couple of telescoping NFB canes, which work pretty well and
Are very light. Plus, when the cane is broken down, it doesn't gain
Any thickness since all the pieces telescope into each other. They can
Collapse at inopportune times, such as when crossing streets, but they
Are pretty handy for taking places and then collapsing to put in a
Purse or backpack. I have a spare in my backpack for just this reason,
And in case of emergency or if I need a cane in a pinch. When using
The telescoping cane verses the straight rigid canes, there is a
Distinct difference as to how it feels and to some degree the kind of
Information you get from it, but they work pretty well.

Good luck,
Wayne
