[nagdu] always taking the dog was guide dogs

Buddy and All,
This is an excellent thread for us to discuss! I have frequently shared
how important I believe it is for us to maintain sound O&M skills with a
white cane because there are some circumstances under which you will not
want or cannot take your guide dog. Buddy has shared a few that he will not
and cited reasons for his choice. Likewise, when I am asked to perform in a
private residence, I will not even ask if I can bring my guide dog. Private
homes are not subject to the ADA. Though a homeowner may agree to allow me
to bring my guide dog if I ask, I will not even make the ask, as the
homeowner may agree even when they do not want to do so. I do not want to
put someone in that position. Additionally, if I attend a church that is not
within my regular Spiritual network, I may ask about whether or not I can
bring my guide dog, explaining that the church has the legal right to deny
access under Federal law.
On the other hand, as Buddy has stated, other places are a matter of
choice. My wife, Merry, and I are close to Busch Gardens and have gone there
on several occasions. We have taken our guide dogs as we strolled through
the gounds and enjoyed the Hospitality House. When it was time for us to
ride the rides, we kennelled our dogs, as roler coasters scare the hell out
of them! Concerts are a matter we handle case by case. We did take our pups
to the James Taylor concert, but we knew we had seats with plenty of room.
The Erik Clapton concert, though, was a different story because of the
seating arangements. If we were to go to the Straz Center, our local
performing arts center, I would definitely take my pup. Of course, as I have
already asserted, my pup goes with me to the beach! (smile)

Fraternally yours,
Marion
