Wayne is exactly right. This is my approach and it works very well. You
remain in a lot more control that way.

Hi. Sorry for the late reply. I've been busy and let my email pile up.

Jennifer, what I do when going sighted guide is hold my cane in my
other hand and shorten it enough to not stick way out, but hold it far
enough to catch the things that the human guide misses, for whatever
reason. It's very helpful when the person doing the guiding is not
really thinking about what they're doing. It has saved me several
times from banging into benches, sighns, poles, and from not tripping
down steps. Whenever this topic comes up with students, I quip, "Just
because the person is guiding you doesn't mean they're good at it."
