Buddy,

I know what you're talking about, but can't explain it any more than you
can.  It's just totally ... different.

Mind you, I don't mind feeling like I have to run. I like going fast. And
really, I don't feel like I'm going to run into a pole exactly, but not
having the immediate feedback of what's a couple feet in front of you is
briefly disconcerting, but only briefly. Certainly it seems you use
different muscles when walking with a dog than you do walking with a cane,
and I can' explain that either.
