Hi every one, I believe that Southeastern used to use Australian Shepherds.I
have a Husky that is only 19 inches. She is just a pet.I started to train
her for guide work but she was too small to keep up with my wheelchair. My
first 2 guides were Siberian Huskies.Lily was 22 inches and Nala is 22 and 1
half inches. They were wonderful guide dogs.I still think that Nala has been
the best guide I have ever had. She was 2 years when I got her from a
breeder and in 4 months, she was working as a guide for me. She learned very
fast and absolutely loved the work.I still use her from time to time, just to
keep her happy. She has never forgotten any part of her job even after being
retired for a while now. My current guide dog is a Belgian Shepherd. He is
23 and 1 half inches and is 65 lbs.He is still young and he has had some
problems with dog aggression after being atacked by a pit bull, but has over
come that. He is working very well now. I am still keeping a look out for
that elusive female husky. If I find her, I will snatch her up and train her
as a guide. I really prefer the huskies as wheelchair guide dogs. They are
smart, focused on the job, love to work and never seem to get tired.Have a
great day, Mardi and Shaman and Nala, retired.
