Hi, Jessica,

I don't know whether you are interested in hearing about my guide, since she
isn't a canine. But I thought I'd contribute to the discussion in any case.
So here are my answers to your little survey--

1. what is your guide's name? Panda
2. age? 9 years old, and still a youngster
3. breed? Miniature Horse
4. how long have you had him/her? about 8 and a half years, since
September, 2001, when she was8 months old
5. what do you feed him/her? Equisafe (a hay product) and Triple Crown
Light (a grain product)
6. if program trained did you train any extra tasks or commands if so what
7. if owner trained what all did you teach? Panda was privately trained in
my town completely using Clicker Training methods. So her trainer and I
could customize her training to be just what I wanted in a guide. She knows
all the usual guide work tasks, including working on roads without
sidewalks, and the "find the way" for situations where she needs to find a
way through crowds of people or through other obstacles, such as roads with
holes, ruts, mud puddles, icey patches, snow, etc.; she finds many targets,
such as doors, gates, chairs, trash cans, steps, elevators, and crossing
buttons; She will "find the car" in a parking lot, she will "find my bag"
which I often put down and later ask her to locate for me; and she will
"find Panda's house" when we want to go home. I taught her to target my
hand with various parts of her body--her nose, forehead, shoulder, ear,
chin, hip--very useful for grooming, medicating and vet care, and
positioning in tight places; she also knows "go to your place" which I use
to have her stand quietly in her spot while I get her food and put it down,
a click is the release to go to her food. She has 2 cues for relieving:
"get busy" for urination, and "park time" for defecation; she will ring a
bell on the door when she wants to go out for a relief break; Oh, yes, I
also taught her to retrieve dropped items, which she loves to do; and she
will "show me" features of a room or new area that we enter, like other
doors, seats, counters, steps, and anything else she thinks I might be
interested in knowing about. We also taught her to draw her head back from
hands that are reaching toward her head or mouth, with or without treats in
them. And she also has a cue to let her know that I just want her to
"chill". We have not taught her to "sit"
8. how do you obtain food, store, order, etc.? Order from a local feed
store which delivers.
9. what state are you from.? New York

Best,
Ann
