[nagdu] NFB and Airlines

Guys,
Security doesn't "let us" go through with our dogs or canes. We don't
get their permission we tell them what we are going to do and we do it.
People with metal body parts like knees don't have the option of making
themselves metal free.
Security has processes in place to deal with this, I've always been
wanded and it's never been an issue.
Don't make any dealings with them about letting them take your dog
through, this isn't a discussion, nor is it something they let you do.
They aren't our mothers letting us have an extra cookie, nor are we
children that need to ask for permission.

Dan,

So do you use a cane to get through the security gate, or do they let
you go
with your dog?

I had a problem with that myself, and naturally had left my carrying
cane in
my backpack when I sent it rhrough. Sigh. I had gone through a
security
check already that morning, and it was hassle free for both of us... So
all
of the heavy handedness and all came as a real shock, and having to go
back
and forth through the stupid metal detector got very, very disorienting.
And upsetting to my still very young dog. I was unprepared for any of
it,
mentally or informationally, so I ended up just trying to go with the
flow
and noticing that it wasn't working for me. Live and learn!

Anyway, my plan for flying again includes having a metal free pocket
cane
for me, and a metal free leash for Mitzi so I have the option of
removing
the harness to take her through if I need to... Although I've been
learning
enough hear to realize that removing the harness is going too far just
to
avoid a bit of possible hassle, so my plan is changing.

Nicely done, Gary!

The only comment I'd make is regarding your way of handling the security
check.
It's fine, no criticism.
But I can't walk a straight line to save my life, even if I go through
the
metal detector without Carter I set it off because I veer and bump the
side--smile.
So, I explain in advance or ask to be wanded, if that's the word.

I have found that, since 9/11, security has gotten much better about how
to
deal with those of us who have guide doggies.
This is in large measure do to the persistent efforts of IAADP NAGDU,
and
GDUI.

I had a lot of problems before 9-11 with airport security, sorry to say,
I
mean there was some real nastiness or just maybe ignorance.

It's sad that a tragedy of earthshaking proportions such as 9/11 was
what
precipitated a change...I tell you, people are funny.

So, I hope you and Humphrey Bogart have many more adventures.

May I ask a question out of curiosity? Do you have partial vision?
It just sounded like you might. No problem--smile--just curious.
