Roxy,
In the same boat here. I avoid stairs as much as I possible can, for the
mere fact, I don't want to fall down them.
Here is what really rubs me raw, blind people who are like, "You are capable
of taking the stairs". Sure I could. And not to say I don't use stairs, But.
But. But. ONLY when I am balanced. It rubs me raw that blind people are so
darn quick to jump to conclusions on what I can and can't do. And they do
not take into account that I might have other disablities. I know. I know. I
know. I am on my soap box here. I will stop now.
Marsha

Subject: Re: [nagdu] Steps
I want my dog to body block me at steps because I have very poor
balance. My dog also body blocks me at curbs. I need to be ready for
that change in elevation and this may mean that I need to stand for a
moment until I feel prepared. Sometimes I can be extra stubborn and
all in a hurry so the body block communicates to me that she is
stopping for a very good reason; not just because she is distracted.
She will also body block me because she is using her nose to point out
the rail. She will refuse to move if my hand is not on the rail or if
she feels that I'm too unsteady. Then she goes step by step, and
needs to be told "ok" before she will move on to the next step. I
realize most guide dog users don't need this level of support from
their dog but I find it a huge help with my vestibular issues.
