[nagdu] EXTERNAL:Re: Full Body Scanning Machines

Hi,

First, I only release the leash when standing right at the entrance to the
detector which means that even after I go through I am separated by three to
four feet only. The TSA people are right there and I even make sure I tell
them how we are proceeding. I have never had a problem with strangers as
also, obviously, the people behind me in line also hear my instructions.

I explain that I will walk through then call the dog. Until I call her, as
I explain it, she will stay where I tell her to stay.

Folks, this isn't complicated and it is reasonable to expect our dogs to
stay in this situation. I trust my dog just as I expect her to trust me.
The fact is we need to adapt to changing situations like security. We don't
get all things our way. With a bit of education and patience the security
process is pretty simple and it is not provocative.

Julie,
Thank you for saying.
I also was concerned about all those "well-meaning" people who want to
"help" That wasn't the dog's fault.
In the situation I mentioned earlier, I just did not have enough
experience with the dog to know what she'd do when I let go of her. We
were still bonding, and it was taking awhile. I wasn't sure she'd do
what I told her to do unless I was right there to back it up. She loved
other people, loved attention from other people, so I wasn't about to
leave her someplace even if I was just a few feet away.
I think what Julie and I are saying is that "I don't want to leave my
dog" doesn't always equal "back to obedience you bad handler!"

I have a couple of thoughts about leaving the dog at a sit stay and
walking
through. First I absolutely do trust my dog to sit and stay where I put

him. I, however, do not trust the millions of very odd folks that seem
to
frequent airports, bus stations and train depots. I can just see some
person picking up the leash and trying to "help" and causing a major
fiasco.
I can see a scenario where I leave my dog a step behind while I go
ahead,
set the metal detector off and we become separated. I'm just really
very
leery of being separated from my dog for any reason, especially in a
busy
environment with lots and lots of things out of my control. Fortunately
for
me I don't fly very often.

Also Monty is not fond of strange people touching him. He absolutely
would
not allow such a thing if I wasn't right there to officiate.

Hi Mike and All -

Can't resist chiming in here. True, you don't choose how they proceed,
but
you definitely have influence. Are these TSA agents looking for ways to
hassle blind people? Generally no. Also, they have a job to do, and they
are
busy. Is there a reason you cannot trust your dog to sit and stay on
command
for the short time it takes you to walk through a scanner? If your
answer is
"yes", it is time to go back to the daily obedience 101 that most
training
programs suggest because SIT and Stay are very basic commands your dog
should perform despite distractions. Your task is to hold the long leash
low
so it doesn't set off the alarm as you walk through without your dog.
As
many of you have already enjoyed sharing, our dogs absolutely love those
patdowns, and want more of them! Besides conducting ourselves as adult
professionals who know what we're doing, That is another great way to
connect with the agents who otherwise are having a stressful, or boring
day
depending on the alert level.
It doesn't have to be traumatic- it can be a way to show off. What do
you
think?

Cathryn (& Abby, also a lover of patdowns)

You may not have the choice. They decide how to examine you.

I would not use the scanner. I trust my dog but want to be where he can
see

me and I can speak to him.

Margo is correct in that holding a long leash may not set off the
traditional detector so long as the leash stays below the scanning
element.
It will NOT work with the full body scanner system. If you are chosen
for a
more detailed scan and can either use the body scanner or are subjected
to a
more rigorous patdown, you could only use the body scanner if you trust
your
dog to stay while you independently go into the scanner.

Cathryn, that will work for metal detectors but probably not for the
full
body scans--that's a different thing.
