Michael,
I go through the metal detector the same way you do. I keep the dog
right in front of the passthrough and we are no more than 2-3 ft
apart. It also helps that my dogs have been the kind that don't
really care to engage with strangers much. I have had someone try and
grab the leash, and my dog remained where she is.
Part of why I do it this way is that most of the time I'm going
through security; I have an ASL interpreter or SSP with me and they
are interpreting the question from the TSA agent. The dog just gets
in the way during this kind of situation. Once I get across and am
filled in as to what will be happening next, I'll call the dog and we
begin the pat down. My dog's gear doesn't seem to set off the
equipment, but the medications such as inhalers and epipens that she
carries for me in her vest always set it off.
Laveau endures the pat down; she doesn't engage with the agent and
just wants to get going, because she's antisocial with strangers. *grin*
Everyone does it differently and I can understand why someone would
want to make a long leash and do it that way, but I'm glad I can do it
my way because it works best for me.
