[nagdu] Walking Dogs

Hi:

I walk my guide dog on a leash while using a cane all the time. IN the morning we go out for a walk around a block or two so he can sniff and do his business. I do this again at just before going to bed. In the day time it depends. At work I let him walk on leash for about ten to fiftenn minutes before I pick up my lunch at the local cafe.

The main reason why I walk him off harness before heading out on our errands is to avoid him having to do a number two while we're out. Around my neighbourhood I know where the garbage cans are but once we're out there then it is much harder. about 75% of the bus stops have garbage cans so that is what I look for when we are out and Bogart offers his contribution. :)

At my school in Canada when I asked about walking my dog with me using a cane and him on a leash they said that we couldn't do that. I thought that was silly and not good for the dog. When I asked my trainer about that while she was out here on her first follow up visit she said that a lot of the dogs are bothered by the cane. Well, that would have been a better answer at the school. The right answer would have been lets try it with your dog and see how he does. Even if he didn't like it to begin with he was going to have to figure it out since that was the only way he would get his enjoyable sniffing walks. :)

I've always wondered how many guide dog owners actually walk their dog on a leash using a cane (if they need one).
