I do the same as Ed Meskys, either go to a side street, and look for a
place between cars.  I also *never make a long leash.  The TSE leash is
short when it's doubled over, and it keeps Ben from wandering out too far
into the street.

If you have a month before your trip, you could practice curbing your dog
near your home.  Then it won't come as such a surprise to her.
