yeah I see where you are coming from.  I guess I'm just a little too 
passionate about blind people and how they are portrayed in the media.  I 
want us to be seen as compatent people with dogs, or caines, or whatever 
else we decide to use.

I understand where you're coming from, but we need to not be so quick to
judge.  I am confident and competent with a cane, but I am definitely more
likely to go do things if I have my dog, because there is more joy in
knowing I am making someone else happy.  We don't know what resources this
man did or did not have, and if he is meeting his personal definition of
independent, way to go for him.
