Rebecca, I am not picking on those like you who were ignorant of the dogs underlying condition.  I do however know people who have service animals who obviously don't care about the animals grooming or for that matter the dog its self.  I'm sure that on this list we all know better and if we don't we can always ask and do are research!  I have always been around dogs and have had some kind of dog sence I can remember.  So, You may be right about the experience but common sense can tell you just by feel if you're dog has stuff in there hair or if it smells funky!  Yesterday at the groomers the cacapoo that came in looked like it rolled in rawhide or something else.  His poor head had stiff hair standing up on top and some narly hair on its face telling me it probably got into something he really enjoyed!  Sence they mostly have poodle hair you could instantly tell that he was deffenitely in need of a bath! 
Intelligence is always claimed but rarely proven!
