I am slightly surprised that the women was offended. Perhaps she was
offended by the tone of the reply rather than the reply itself. I do not
usually get firm/terse until someone has actually started petting. I have a
lot of people, particularly the people I see regularly around the campus,
ask in that way of "I know ... can I ...". My response and its tone depends
on several factors, but rarely, if ever, have I had someone whom I had told
no do it anyway.
