[nagdu] beginning to use a cane

Larry,
Yes, I remember calling it the T. And I remember when the fare was twenty
five cents! When I lived in Boston, the blind got to ride for free when you
showed the guy in the booth your Commission for the Blind ID card. Do they
still do this? It was a whole lot easier to get you and your dog through
the gate than it was in getting the dog throuogh the turnstiles.

In San Diego, we have what's called a Compass Card that gets electronically
"loaded" with fare for unlimited riding each month - monthly fare is $18.00
for seniors, disabled, and Medicare recipiants. This replaced the paper
passes we used to get until about two years ago. There are machines we have
to tap the card onto to register that we rode and was paid up. There are a
few of these located where I could find them and Landon goes to them - I tap
my card, and Landon gets a free sniff. On the bus, the machine to tap the
card is located next to the farebox.

We have no turnstiles to access the trolley and we are on the "trust system"
where they hope we all either buy a ticket at the machines or have a paid-up
Compass Card with us. There are turnstyles in one of the grocery stores I
sometimes go to. Lots of places for a harness handle or leash to get
snagged up on while going through this - a real pain! I let Landon go
through first.

Lyn and Landon
