Also about dog boots...if you gradually work up to rougher and rougher 
terrain, the dogs pads will toughen up naturally.  If you're planning on 
hiking in areas that could have sharp rocks, the boots might be a good idea.

And of course just like with people, the dog will need to ease into the more 
strenuous exercise gradually.
