Hello all, I was curious about the subject of a little off topic, but was glad to see that it was about volunteering with our dogs. I am a volunteer at American Foundation for the Blind, Center on Vision Loss in Dallas. Feel free to look at afb.org. In Dallas, where I am, there is an apartment set up in our building that has all of the cool things that people with blindness or low vison may find useful. People who going blind love meeting with me or our other people with vision loss, especially when they are first diagnosed. They are also very glad to see me with my dog, as many of them are wanting a dog for themselves. We are also active with the Lone Star Puppy Raisers, who are a club that raises for Guide Dogs for the Blind, as has for about a year. Our club leaders had raised for GDB years ago and when a move brought them to Texas, they looked around and found a group raising for GDF and joined the fun. In early 2010 they were given the green light to raise puppies as an experiment, now they are the real deal. Check out their blog at www.guidedogtx.blogspot.com, or find them under lone star puppy raisers on facebook. I know I am really off the topic of volunteering, but I will say that they love having me and other graduates who have joined them for their activities. They love knowing how independent I am and it makes them feel good about what they do. I also, along with my dog sing in my church choir.

But it *is* a service fraternity, which meant we did all kinds of different service projects with all sorts of different organizations. Humane societies, food banks, cleanup, I was even a dead body in a coffin for a haunted house once. Yeah, good times.

After this, all of you can speak with the head of the Biology department, or someone with equivalent power, depending on the university you attend. I would start low on the chain first--it seems as though you are preparing well in advance for such an issue, as you are taking the class in the fall. Before you take it, talk to the above-mentioned people and then approach the head of the department. I'm sure there are exceptions to the agreement that the person writing did not anticipate. If the head of the department doesn't play ball, then get your college's ADA coordinator involved, assuming the college has one.
