Hi,

I don't know much about Freedom either, but John Byfield is one of that vanishing breed of guide dog instructors. You know, the kind that has been around long enough to have forgotten what most guys know. Mr. Byfield has been in the biz for something over 40 years, worked at Guide Dog Foundation (I think after coming from the British GDBA), then was the head of training for Fidelco from its founding until 2009, when he left Fidelco and started working for Freedom. So, while I can't say anything specifically about Freedom, I can say that you won't find their training lacking, not at all. And, while training in a school setting is great, there are definite advantages to training in your home area. There are disadvantages too, but that's true of anything.

I met Eric who owns Freedom Dogs back in July when he came to my agency as he was training one of my consumers with a new dog. Home training is good because it helps you go places in the area you live and places you frequent. It also gives you one on one with the instructor. Class settings are good too as you meet new people , stay at there facility and train in different areas.
