Just a story about my getting a guide dog, for those new to the list, and
thinking about getting a dog.
Good morning Marilyn and all:
Just an FYI, Marilyn, was the person who introduced me to the Guide Dog
Foundation here in NY. I wasn't totally blind and still have some sight, but
then I had more than I have now! She told me I didn't have to be totally
blind to get a guide dog; and introduced me to Phyllis Harrington, who has
now been taken from us about 2 years is it now Marilyn, or 3. Great lady,
and any graduate of GDF should remember her.
I applied to the school, did a video, did a home interview, about six months
later, I got Maxx, a Black Lab in Feb 2007.
Not only was the school close to me, but I got to be close to the employees
and staff there as well. Maybe me feel comfortable and I know that I made
the right decision.
Marilyn is a good friend and a good lady. We got to know each other through
the NY Organ Donor Network, where both Marilyn and I still advocate. I am a
kidney transplant survivor and she donated her husband's corneas when he
past away.
If I don't say it enough, since we don't see each other as often, thank you.

> depends what your needs are. I need a dog that can find things for me like
> doors, steps, bus stops and trains. I also like leash guiding when I am in
> my agency or have to run out to break my dog . When the dog is guiding me
> I always have her harness on. My dog does a lot of work through out a day.
> I am in the field a lot for my job. I am an Independent Living Skills
> Specialist and I do outreach / Advocacy. I go to lots of trainings and
> meeting so my dog must be able to find things for me. Example last
> Wednesday I had an outreach and a co worker came with me. there were many
> doors in this building so I told Anna find the door and she did but it was
> the wrong door. My co worker said she is right finding the door but didn't
> know which door. People get a big kick when they hear me say find the
> seat and find the trash. They said how does the dog know all that. I said
> the dog was trained to do these things and it my job to keep up the
> training. So as I said its all in what you need for your life style.
> Wishing you the best.
> marilyn and Anna
