I really can't speak to this issue sence Holly is probably the most laid back dog except for Pez.  She does however sometimes eat stuff off the floor.  At home, if it drops and its not to big and bad, the dogs get it!  While working however, no way!  She is rarely off leash while outside because I live in the city and don't have a fence.  But when she does get off leash, look out!  She loves to run and snoop into everything!  I usually let her off at my Mother-in-laws because they have 5 acres.  We let her run and play and make sure she doesn't find any deer parts or anything else funky for her to eat or roll in!  
Intelligence is always claimed but rarely proven!
