Steve,

The van is a private vehicle, but the hotel is most certainly a public 
accommodation.

In talking the situation over with my family and taking into account my 
scheduling goof, I'm trying to figure out other transportation there.  
That leaves only the hotel situation.  I like your idea of making the 
rules and consequences clear from the beginning.
