[nagdu] walking in to objects

Hannah,

Generally, no, they shouldn't walk you into things, but dogs don't have the
same dept perception as we do, so showing them how to act in a narrow area
by reworking it seems to get the point across.

Katy, my current dog did that a few times when we were first matched. I
particularly remember a situation when we'd just finished training. We were
going into a Save A Lot and Katy had to go between a poll and a rack of
shopping carts. There was plenty of room, but she rushed us between and I
wound up running my right side into the poll. I gave Katy a harness
correction, turned around and reworked the narrow space while giving her
quiet praise the whole time. When she slowed enough for me to perceive the
narrow spot I gave her the forward command in that same, calm voice and we
slowly went through without me running into it. I gave her huge lovins
right there in the parking lot.

Now Katy will slow down when we come to a narrow spot. I've gotten to the
point that I will slow down with her and use my right elbow as a guide to
avoid things at waist level. it's not a foolproof method because sometimes
there are things I can't detect with my limited facial vision, but we
haven't had nearly the amount of bumps like we did when I was first matched.

Lisa
