Hi, Steve,
The handler should definitely contact their school and then go through the steps of rehabilitation.
He'she could also look into attending obedience classes at Petsmat or Petco,d despite they aren't guide dog training classes.
I had to enroll Freedom David Berry, my last guide in the obedience training one on one at Petsmart to try and help him calm down as he was very jumpy, skittish upon being nervous.
Although I did feel like I wasted nearly $100.00 for the classes once I found out that Freedom couldn't be saved as a guide regardless of the amount of rehabilitation I tried with him, the executive director of Pilot Dogs told me I did the right thing by enrolling him into those classes and was willing to work with him.
Freedom was never attacked by another dog, but he was traumatized with an unknown passenger on the city bus attacked me instead.
Situations between Freedom and my current partner were different from each one though.
When Odie was jumped on by another guide dog in our training class, I had to do the slow process of rehabilitating him which included taking him to other events where there would be dogs around.
The dogs we came in contact with were controlled and behaved on leash.
I made sure to help him understand that not all dogs are bad, and there are some well-mannered ones out there.
Yes, we did encounter some dog owners who didn't continuously keep an eye on their dogs and that did make it tough.
Please keep them "what would you don" ponders coming.
I enjoy them and it really keeps me thinking.
*Smiles*
Bibi
