[nagdu] People food

Julie and all,

The list becomes controversial because we all have differing views on these
things. I admit that for years I have given my dogs pizza crusts, and,
selfishly, I enjoy this little ritual, though probably not as much as my
dogs. But if I had a dog that was totally out of control in restaurants, or
who put their head in guests laps while eating at my house, I would of
course stop this practice. But, like Tracy and Julie, I have rules. No PC's,
as we call them around here, during or immediately after the pizza is being
consumed by humans. The dogs always get them before bed, which is their
treat time. And I give them in one particular place, making the dog sit, of
course. This has never translated into out of control lunging for pizza when
we eat it away from home. My dogs get baby carrots, green beans and pieces
of apple. The other tradition the dogs and I have enjoyed over the years is
that we share the turkey giblets on Thanksgiving, if I've cooked the turkey.

I think most of us know our dogs well enough to determine if giving people
food will or won't cause bad behavior. I'm sure some schools frown on this
practice, and probably trainers have varying opinions on the subject, just
as the subscribers to this list. I've had dogs for more years than I care to
divulge haha, and giving certain people foods at prescribed times and places
has been a fun part of living with guide dogs. But I respect that
others may not share this view, and think it unwise. But it is an
interesting topic. As they say, in France and elsewhere, vive la diference!

My views on people food are extremely similar to Tracy's. Monty doesn't
scrounge for food when in harness. Out of harness he will take
advantage of opportunities, but isn't a nuisance. Yesterday for
example, the new shipment of dog food came. both bags had broken open
in the box and there was a trail of kibble. Monty didn't hesitate to
help get that cleaned up. then last nightI noticed him licking the
floor. Apparently something was spilled earlier.

When I had house guests who didn't observe the rules about food, I did
have a problem with him being inappropriate around food. We had a
discussion and the rules were strictly enforced. It took a couple of
weeks, but he's fine again.

ways. We have rules; he scrounges for food anyway. The only people food I
ever give my dogs is carrots. At Starbucks they have a doggie latte that is
essentially a small cup of whipped cream. Nope. The dog begs enough. And
I've seen dogs that got people food go into places and wave their beaks
around like a sweeper, and this was a GSD. I don't really get the concept of
giving the dogs people food. Understand, though, that this is just my view
and the man to whom I used to be married. He was very strict about such
things, and I have followed suit.
