I wonder if they were taking off on the movie based on the Harlan Ellison 
short story, a Dog and His Boy." It is a dystopian SF after the disaster 
story, about a boy teamed up with a mutant dog who is intelligent and can 
speak. The boy meets a woman his age and is tempted by her, but at the end 
he kills her and he and dog cook and eat the carcass. Ed Meskys
