Yes, I've also noticed that people with certain health problems tend to
have a heavier hand with their cane and don't recognize when it has
contacted something as readily as young healthy people. The main group
I'm thinking about is diabetics. Perhaps their hands have less sensitivity?

I think the main thing though is stress. Convention is stressful on
people and dogs. I have good O&M skills, but convention is still a very
challenging situation for me. I try to spend a few hours the first day
just wandering around, figuring out the main layout of the hotel. By
the end of the week I'm actually starting to feel like I know where in
the world I'm going.

I also find that because of my own stress and uncertainty I am less
forgiving of others mistakes. Conventions draw about 3,000 attendees.
The town I live in has only about 7,000. So I am not accustomed to
that many people all in one space. Add in that these are people from
all over the place with different social customs and varying levels of
travel skills...Remember I live in the Midwest where people are polite
to the extreme...and well sometimes I find that I need to escape to my
hotel room to regroup.

I try to leave myself twice as much time as I think I'll need to find a
particular room. I avoid the exhibit hall on the first day. I take
advantage of outdoor recreational areas. I invite friends to my room as
a quieter, lower stress place to visit. And I plan on not getting to do
everything I want to do. I think it all helps, but convention is
stressful no matter how you slice it.

So some people will need to swing the cane pretty wide to make sure that the space their body is about to enter is clear of obstacles.
