[nagdu] Never worked a male before

Hi Buddy,
I had a female pet dog who used to mark as we walked. she squatted and
actually lifted one of her back legs as she peed. The more dominant females
will do this. Submissive females and males rarely do this.

As for peeing on every upright surface you pass on a route, that can be
corrected ONLY if you come down on the dog the very first time he tries it.
I have a friend who allowed his dog to do this and then he got annoyed about
it and the dog was hard in his habit to mark everything along his street.
Hopefully, he will not allow his new dog get into this habit.

Marking is a canine habit, usually by the dominant male and dominant female.
Dogs are territorial by nature and our domestic dogs are canines with
natural habits. We can modify thesse habits by training and it works if we
are consistant in not allowing this behavior either in the house or out
working.

When they mark, they release a very small amount of urine - usually just
several drops - and go along their territory and leave these series of drops
to alert the other dogs in the neighborhood know who left them and where
that dog's territory begins.

Back in the ninties, there was a movie - forget the name of it - where a man
went into the Artic to study the wolves there. they were coming into his
tent to steal his food and he came up with the idea to set up his own "Keep
Out" sign for them. He drank a whole lot of water and walked around his
area leaving small amounts of his own urine - he marked - in the language
the wolves would understand. It worked!

I'm really perplexed by this belief that people seem to have that male dogs
have a, excuse me, marked tendency to mark.

For one thing, I'm told that they're generally parked such that they
continue the habit of squatting when they pee and don't get in the habit of
lifting a leg on something. Even so, if we're near a post or wall or
something at park time, Leno will life his leg on it. But, and i stress this
emphatically, only at park time. He does not, nor did his predecessors, make
a point of stopping to mark during our walks, nor at any time in our house.
I'm not sure quite how this works, but I'm told that female dogs also can
mark, and sometimes do.
