Generally Monty stays out of the kitchen when I'm cooking, but if he 
decides that it's taking too long and he needs to visit, I tell him to 
down and stay in the dining room.  It's out of my way, but he can still 
see me. We are both happy.

I have never really used tie downs.  Monty has a crate where he sleeps 
at night, but I can't remember the last time I shut the door.  Of course 
he's been here for some time.  I didn't give him as much freedom in the 
beginning.
