[nagdu] Nail Clippers

Hannah,

I cut my dogs nails myself. I have let sighted people do it before and
it didn't work out so well. If you are uncomfortable doing it and
choose to have someone else cut them go with someone who is comfortable
and knows at least a little about what they are doing.
I also wanted to add that if your dog has black nails sighted people
can't see the quick any more than you can.

I have both a Pedi Paws and regular nail clippers. The Pedi Paws is a
nail grinder. It does work, but it's slow. If you use every week or
two I think it would be fine. I used to do that.

Now I use the regular cutters. I have a pair from King Wholesale, but I
think they discontinued my particular brand. Any pet supply store
should carry them though. I use the kind that are like a cross between
scissors and plyers. You squeeze the handles together which makes the
blade slide forward to cut. There is a metal loop or hole where the
nail goes when the blade slides forward it presses the nail against that
loop and the blade cuts the nail.

I put my finger on the underside of the loop so I can feel how much nail
is pokeing through. My pholosophy on cutting is always less is more.
You can always make a second cut, but it's hard to put it back together
if you cut too much! *smile*

I'd start with maybe 1/16 of an inch and work up as you get
comfortable. If you've had them done at a groomer or someplace, notice
how short they are and aim for that as your final length. If your'e
worried about taking off too much, try trimming just a bit and then
leaving them for a few days or a week and then give them another go.
The quick receedes in the nail proportional to it's length.

HTH
