Hi Debbie,

It seems to me that it is an unacceptable work condition for you to work
straight from 2 to 10. You must get breaks and lunch/dinner. Why can't you
take Kagney out then? Of course, you could. Your boss is being
unreasonable under the law. You do have the right of a reasonable
accommodation for you and your guide.

Having said all that, you do need to do what you think is best. All I would
say is that having your boss go contrary to the law and all that the NFB
stands for is something you should consider questioning with your boss and
HR. Of all places the VA should support the rights and needs of blind
persons.

Best,

Michael Hingson

Subject: [nagdu] New job, Cagney can't be with me

I left the pre-school for this new job as a switchboard operator at the VA
Hospital here in Kansas City.
My boss told me
That Cagney could not be with me cause I will be alone on the 2 to 10 shift
and could not leave the room to take her out . I plan to leave her with my
husband while I am at work he is also disabled and walks around On crutches
but he loves her as much as me. Does this make me a bad person, I want her
with me but I cannot leave the room in case I have to handle a maintance
problem or call a code blue or red and I am the only one there. There is a
bathroom with a phone on it,I've box, coffee pot and a little tv for the down
times. The pay is good and I just want to take care of my hubby and Cagney.
I don't see how I can get around this , what do you all think? Debbie
