Hi, Chantel and other Pilot grads,
Depending on the trainer you've had during class, each of the trainers did things differently.
During both of my classes at Pilot and one at GEB, I was told to cut my dog loose if need be or just drop the leash.
Another option is to just drop the harness handle while hanging on to the vety top of the leash so again, dog is able to defend his/herself.
If I remember correctly, there is a service dog protection law in Ohio.
I'll do some digging around later on to see what I can find upon sending it off to you via email instead of the list.
Best advice I can give to you is if you still have problems with dogs not being controlled on leash properly or ones who aren't leashed at all is to report it to your local animal control as well with the police department.
I also remember during all of my training classes that I was given a small print booklet of laws such as access and other things, but am not remembering off the top of my head.
I'll admit that Odie has come close to destroying some dogs, especially the ones who were off leash if they approached in a bad way or ones that were leashed up, but definitely out of hand.
Since he ended up getting attacked during the last day of class by another guide dog in training who happened to be apart of the same group, Odie has always been on edge with having a low tolerance to misbehaved dogs.
I still get on him and make it clar that he isn't going to get out of hand, but only if he barked or growled while in harness and even when wearing his orange vest.
Bibi
