YOU KNOW YOU'RE A PUPPY RAISER WHEN
(from the internet)
Editor's note: Puppy raisers from several schools contributed to this. Enjoy
it and
share it with puppy raisers!
*You Know You are a Puppy Raiser When ---:
you've ever stepped on a nylabone with bare feet in the middle of the
night.
you've cleaned out a dog crate at 2am because some one had an accident.
one of your favorite smells in the world is puppy breath.
your hand feels empty without a leash in it.
you've ever walked around the department store for 15 minutes looking
for the elevator because you can't take the escalator.
you've ever cried because your dog went off to college.
you've ever refrained from chewing somebody out because they feel sorry
for your dog.
your legs feel bare without a leash laying across them.
your hands have ever been sore because of puppy teeth.
you've ever cried because your dog did not make it as a guide.
you've ever laughed because your dog did not make it as a guide.
you've ever cried because your dog made it as a guide.
you've ever smiled because your dog made it as a guide.
you've ever been told by the cashier at the grocery store that you're
doing a wonderful thing that she could never do.
the thing you look forward to most is going to your dog's graduation.
the first thing you see in the morning is a wiggly puppy bursting out
of its crate.
you've ever fed a puppy at school or work.
you've ever gone to the bathroom in public with a dog in your stall.
you've ever had a waitress look under the table and say "Oh look, I
didn't know there was a dog there!"
you've ever taken a picture of a dog on a bus.
you know the exact date your pup was born, their ID numbers, their
siblings names, and the day you got them.
you've ever walked a dog wearing high heels and a cocktail dress.
you've seen dozens of movies at the theater with your dog.
with every load of laundry, at least two poop bags come out of your
jeans.
more than five people a week ask you how old your dog is.
you've seen a "No Dogs Allowed" sign and not hesitating entered with
your dog.
you can't count the number of times a child has screamed after you
"Look, Mommy! A doggy!!"
your car has an incredible amount of dog hair in the foot well of the
passenger seat.
you didn't name your dog.
more people know you by your dog's name than yours.
if you're out without your dog, the first thing out of people's mouths
is "Where is your dog?"
at least one person asks you "Are you blind?"
you say "let's go" *{Or Forward in GDF's Case*} when you start to walk,
regardless of whether you have your dog with you.
you've had people give you funny looks because they can't see who
you're talking to.
were a raiser when.. you use some of ...the same training ideas on your
toddler!
you have dance pictures from HS with dogs in them
your senior picture had/has your puppy in it.
you know first hand how dirty restaurant floors really are.
you've really, really, REALLY wanted to punch the people who say "Oh
it's great that YOU'RE doing that. I never could. I love them too much,
I could never give them up."
THE VOICE OF JUNO
(From the internet)
I bring you greetings. I am the spirit of Juno. You met me the
First time you came to this school. I exist in that special space
where your hand meets
the harness handle. I learned about you as you walked with your
instructor.
We worked together to help choose your new dog.
I am here on this very important day on behalf of the dog you are about
to meet for the first time. By the way, your future friend is a bit
nervous too.
You know, we can sense changes in the wind and that can be very
hard.
Your new partner asked me to mention a few things now so we all start off on
the right paw,,, foot,,, whatever. Hear now what your guide dog wishes
to share.
"Hello. I don't really understand everything that is going on today,
but it feels like things are about to change for me. Changes sometimes
upset
Me. One never knows what is around the next corner or behind the next door.
I hope you will understand if it takes me a while to adjust to you. I
promise will work very hard.
For a long time I have been learning a really great job. I have been
taught to guide your steps as we walk together wherever you want to go.
I have learned my job well. I will do all that I can so you never get
hurt. I don't always know why we are going here or there, but I trust you to
know that. We will work together to accomplish everything you want to.
I need to mention a few things right here at the outset of our
friendship.
Just as you need me to keep you safe as we travel, I need you to
provide for me.
I don't always know what is best for me so I must depend on you to
make those decisions for me. So,,, forward we go.
I love to crunch and munch good food. I would like my food bowl to be
well filled at least five times a day. Well,,, I guess I can make due with
Two bowls.
I do expect that you will take care of that very important
task.
By the way, I will certainly let you know if you are late with my
food. I will never say no
to any treats you would like to give me. Oh yes,
water is great too.
You humans have so many strange wrappings you put on your bodies. I
understand this when it is cold; you don't have an excellent fur coat
like I do.
My admittedly beautiful coat deserves daily attention so when I strut
my stuff I make all the other dogs jealous. I want to look so good
That they will all want to be me!
I know that I will not be perfect in my work for you. There will be times
when you will need to correct me. Please, only do that when I need it.
I promise I will learn as we get to know each other and you shouldn't
need to do that very often.
I do understand that it is for my own good. It is a
hard job I do and I don't always do everything right. Who does?
On the other paw, I do my job well and I need you to let me know that
too.
I love to hear human voices when they say nice things to me. It makes me
feel happy when I am working to hear that I am getting everything right.
It makes my tail want to wag. I trust you to always tell me with words and
pets that I am appreciated. I need you to tell me that I am a good dog
every day. Those words mean so much to me.
I am very healthy and young now, but there may come a time when I get
sick.
Please help me when I cannot help myself. I trust you to know when I
need that sort of help. I work best when I feel bright eyed and
bushy-tailed.
Oh yes,,, let's avoid pests like fleas, ticks and especially those nasty
worms. None of them deserve to make a home on my beautiful shiny coat
or even inside my body.
I love to play. It is so much fun to play tug-o-war with the rope, bone,
fetch the bouncy ball or chew the squeaky toy. Sharing playtime with
You makes me so happy. My tail nearly wags right off! Please spend just a
little time each day playing with me; after all, you have so very much time
as compared to me. I promise to make it as much fun for you as it is
for me.
You can trust me. I will guide your steps to all the places you want to
go. I will guide you any time, day or night. I will travel with you in
All kinds of weather and on any road you want to walk. We will find joy in
our
work together as often as we can. I look forward to sharing many years
with you.
To sum up all that I have said:
If you give to me your love in all the
ways you can, I will give to you everything that I am for all the days
of my life.
I have not yet met you, but I already know that I will love
you."
