[nagdu] anal glands

Hola Chicos:

Alright--after a round of initial research, I have found more information:
It is possible to have anal glands removed--however, this is usually only done in cases of recurring anal gland infection. The removal of anal glands can result in rather unpleasant side effects for both dog and human. Some include fecal incontinence, the feeling of needing to empty the bowels when they are already empty, and draining fistulae. So, I suppose I would only resort to that if Bailey had some sort of anal gland tumor or frequent recurring anal gland infection. Other thoughts still welcome.
Sincerely,

In regards to anal glands, isn't it possible to get them removed? I seem to remember seeing something like that on my insurance papers--it's something they don't cover. Do anal glands serve any useful purpose? I only ever hear of them when they are causing problems--so I must wonder why people don't just remove them (since it appears that is possible). I suppose I will do a bit of research about this--in the meantime, what do you all think? Bailey has not had anal gland problems as yet--I hope this continues to be the case. If he does develop such, and if it is possible to have them removed without too much fuss, then I might just go that route--he can be quite an expensive puppy!

Whenever Lexia goes in for a check up or her vaccinations, the vet expresses Lexia's anal glands. This is at least once a year, as I have to send GDB the annual health form thing (which I don't mind).
