[nagdu] Working Our Dogs

Hi Sara,
How long have you been home with Wizard? It's not uncommon for a dog to
work slower and act like they don't want to work, but try to put yourself in
their paws as your environment is totally new to them. First, establish
regular patterns with Wizard to build up both his speed and confidence. As
he gets familiar with his surroundings, things will change. I had the exact
same thing happen to me when I was issued Bennett back in May, but after
about 2 weeks, it was like a light switch went on. Give him lots of praise,
encouragement and rebuild his confidence. I can hardly keep Bennett back
anymore as he works like a little draft horse, and, this is the result of
working 4 dogs over the past 21 years, and knowing a little about how they
work, think, and act.
HTH, Steve & Bennett

Wizard used to love to work when we were at the school with instructors but
now that we're home he goes slow and acts like he don't want to go.

I work Landon most days and what he gets depends on my schedule.
Landon
likes his days off and so do I. I think new dogs need more work because
they still need the practice. It also depends on the dog's personality as
well.

Hello list,
I was wondering how often do you work your dogs? I feel like I
have to
work Wizard every day and I feel guilty if I just let him have
one day
off. How long is the longest you've allied your dogs time off?

Lyn my husband and I were at the convention last weekend. Our
dogs
misbehaved and growled and were immediately corrected. I would
agree with
you if we chose not to bring our dogs under control but we did
and it
didn't happen again. When you know all of the facts then please
make
judgment calls on whether a dog should remain in a situation. I
don't
know of any dog that hasn't made a misstep and the important
thing is that
the dogs were corrected properly and immediately. In fact they
were still
lying at our feet. They didn't stand up or approach in any way.
