Hello Ann,
Thank you. I think that you have a point, and I have been thinking about it
a lot lately. I will hopefully hear from Pilot soon, and will ask about
getting Princess back if she does not work out for other people.

Hi, Hannah,
I certainly sympathize with your pain and feeling of loss. I have had to
send back two guide dogs that didn't make it after placement. However, even
if you do have ownership of Princess, if the dog is under age 5 or so and is
healthy and would probably be able to serve as a guide for someone with a
different lifestyle, I think almost any school would want to get the dog
back so that they could prepare her to go out with another blind person.
The school has a lot of time and money invested in each dog, and they do not
want to see a dog retired unnecessarily. If you could keep her yourself,
and if you had had her long enough that she would only have a couple of
years of work left, then I think the school would be happy to have you keep
her as a pet. But since she is young and probably able to work for someone
in a less distracting environment for many years, it would seem like a waste
to place her as a pet with someone with whom she is not already bonded. In
other words, since you have to give her up anyway, why prevent her from
becoming a guide for someone else, just for the chance to perhaps see her
once in a while? (I don't know, but it might make a difference as to
whether the school exerts itself to find another dog for you quickly, if
that is what you want.)
Perhaps you could get Pilot to agree in writing to give her back to you for
placement as a pet if they re-evaluate her and decide for whatever reason
not to send her out again as a guide.
Best,
Ann

Tina,
Thank you for your concern. I am concerned as well. I'm not really sure who
has ownership, and I think I might have a copy of the agreement but it's at
home so I don't have access to it right now. I will call and ask. If I do
have ownership of Princess, then that would be wonderful!

Hannah- I have been reading the messages concerning your situation with
having to retire your dog. I am very sorry to hear that Princess has to be
retired at such a young age. However, what has me really concerned is the
fact that you believe that Pilot still has ownership of your dog. Now your
fellow Pilot grads have stated that you do have ownership upon graduation.
My question to you is do you have a copy of your ownership agreement? And
also, is it clear on the complete ownership? The reason I'm asking this is
because there have been some instances where schools have said they grant
full ownership upon completion of training however within the ownership
agreement there is a Claus that states that the school may take procession
of the dog if they deem necessary.
Best
Tina

Thank you marsha and all. Yes, university life is very difficult for dogs
and it does take a lot. Guess Princess doesn't have it either.
She is only 3 acording to Pilot, and they seem to want her back. I haven't
really been able to connect with them because they are not calling me back.
I can't have a pet in the dorms and I can't really afford to keep one
either, but I do have very close friends who would love to have Princess.
I'm going to do my best to try to keep her, but since I don't have ownership
of her and she is only 3, I think that she'll get some more training with
Pilot and go work with someone else. Maybe she'll do better in other
environments, who knows...

Hannah,
Awwww I am very very sorry to hear about this. Its so hard to retire your
parnter at any point. Espically during your semester. I have been there done
that, not sure i want to do that again.
I am learning as a university student myself it takes a very very special
pup to be able to put up with university life. My university also has many
of the same challenges as yours. Squirrels, bikers, skateboarders, thousands
of students, cars, trucks, subway, train, birds, and more. The pup so far is
doing great, emma could not.
I wish you luck. Will you keep Princess as a pet? And will you get another
guide? Just curious.
