Sean,

Ugh! Annoying, for sure.

In my experience, some days are just like that when you're going about
with a guide dog. /lol/ You can go along just fine, walking into stores
and restaurants, all sorts of places without a hitch. Then one day, it
turns out you've got a kick me sign on your back that you can't manage
to remove. I hate days like that, and I get pretty snippy by the 2nd or
3rd round. Then I go out the next day same as always but grumpy in
advance, and does anyone give me an access challenge to argue with?
Nope! I'm all ready and prepped for a proper fight and not a soul to
fight with. Go figure. /lol/

While it is true that many immigrant business owners or employees aren't
up on the ADA, there are plenty of home grown jerks. Oddly, I had one of
those days where the only person who didn't bat an eye about the guide
dog was the only person with an accent I encountered, and it sounded
totally middle eastern to me. So much for generalities and expectations,
huh? /lol/ True, not all middle eastern immigrants are Muslim, but I
hear the accent and go for the assumption, nonetheless. Oddly, people
with that general accent have consistently been a non problem for me.
People who sound just like me, and who can be observed to have the same
skin color... Weird, huh? But there it is. Discussing questions with an
immigrant with a strong accent can be tricky and more time consuming,
but usually it ends well and everything can continue as it should.

I was wondering how much educating I would have to do when we moved
here, since my guide dog may be the first anyone has actually seen
walking through their door... So far, none at all. People are pretty
well-informed, it turns out. There are a handful of service dog users
these days, so apparently they've done a good job of educating. I will
have to thank then when I meet them. /lol/

Hope your next jaunt goes better.

Tami
