[nagdu] names, street and otherwise

Hello!

I've given many of my dogs an alias name. But I didn't use street names.
I've always let my family know what the name was so that they would call the
dog by that name when we were out together. I don't think it matters what
you call the dog as long as it doesn't sound like the dog's real name. For
example, we adopted a four-year-old dog whose name was Babe. We didn't like
that name but didn't want want to confuse the dog. So we named her Jade. She
adapted to it almost immediately. There have also been times that I've just
told people that I don't give out my dog's name. Most people seem to
understand. A few were highly offended.

Speaking of dog names, sometimes having a human name can be confusing for
the dog. AS you know my current dog's name is Hazel. The day we got back
from Seeing Eye I went over to my church for a congregational meeting. I met
my best friend Hazel there. When I addressed her by name, Hazel thought I
was talking to her. It took her a while to learn that I wasn't always
talking to her. MY husband, in the effort to differentiate between the two
Hazels in conversation, decided that the person was Hazel 2 and the dog was
Hazel 4. The logic behind this escaped me at first. Then I realized that the
numbers referred to the number of legs.

I know a number of handlers who have "street" names for their dogs, and it
has made a difference. I really have not thought of a street name for any
of my dogs thus far, but it is something worth considering with the next
dog.

Daniel,

Yes I will have a street name for this dog. And this is a personal desicion
completely, no school says you have to have a street name. My reasoning is
that I am a student on a major university campus, so if everyone knew her
real name, we could we could be walking down the sidewalk, and someone could
walk up and say hi "buddy". if that was truely there name. It could in turn
make the dog distracted, and get hurt. Your not using the street name with
the dog, but eh public. It would be the same if you were anywhere, its
always a possibility to be distracted. I did not do this with my previous
guides, but wish I had.

I am not giving out the name of this dog for the reason above, but because
here at GDF, the uppy raiser must be notified that their pup is in class and
has a match. Believe me I would love to tell you, but I am respecting the
fact that this school has uppy raisers and sponsors for my pup.

somewhere that some people actually come up with "street names" for there
dog, do any of yall do that here? If so, it doesn't confuse the dog to be
called by 2 different names?
