[nagdu] Learning new routes with a guide dog.

GDF seems to be the only school that teaches off-leash anything.
In Europe guide dog users are encouraged to let their dogs free run, i.e. run off-leash, something we in the U.S. are strongly *discouraged* from doing.

The flip side is that we are encouraged to take our dogs and go exploring, something that doesn't seem to happen in Europe.

Am I right in this?

The lady from Sweeden also said that people with guide dogs have no access rights. I find it intriguing that dog users are not encouraged to go exploring, and also have no access rights. I can't help wondering if this is due to the school being sponsored (they get their money) from the government.
It almost sounds like while the government sponsors the school, actual users have very little reason to get a dog. They have no access rights, and they need to be shown a route by a sighted person before they do it with their dogs.
And I realized I may have confused by my term "off-leash". I probably should have used "free run".

WWhat do you mean by off leash? And what do you mean by government? Something that GDF teachs alot on is the off leash recall. I can go out of the room, leave my dog in a sit stay, or a down stay and when I come back she will still be there. Not sure what you mean, so I wanted to get clarificiation.

The school don't recommend this method because all guide dogs aren't made for it. I've done it with my dog; she loves new adventures and thinks known roads are boring. You can use a GPS when you work your dog. You need to remember to praise the dog even if she doesn't find the 'right' lamppost; it's your fault when it goes wrong not the dog because she doesn't know what you expect from her.
