[nagdu] things on the floor was Re: Dogs and instructors

I guess this goes under the "puppy proofing" rule. If you think your pup is going to chew on it, then don't have it on the floor. If a pup chews up say a shoe, off leash, then that pup goes back on leash for a certain amount of time. There has to be rules.

I do agree that outdoor guiding work is structured. Inside out harness is not. Such a new concept for me, is that my new guide leash guides. This could bring up a long list of discussions. But if I were in my home, needing to be guided, technically that pup is working. Its not the harness that makes our guides, guide dogs. Its what it does for us. So yes they pups are allowed to play and be loved, but at the same time, if they are expected to have manners out of the home, inside of the home is the same.

Different programs focus on different things. I guess that is what I look for in a guide, one who can behave in my home.

Just my two cents,

If the dog takes socks/wallets/whatever, put said things away. Problem solved. Just my thoughts, of course, but I believe in setting the dog up for success instead of creating an environment full of potential failure.

I know dogs will be dogs, but not all dogs chew everything in sight. Also if the dog is worked enough, no board, then there is no reason for a pup to chew on things in the home. We as handlers can influence our dogs not to chew on things. Like I said this is my opinion only.
