I leave toys on the ground but he thinks socks and shoes are more
intedesting. I always give him a firm verbal correction if that
don't work he gets put on leash.

I have to be very careful about what I leave on the floor as
well.
You could try leaving toys down for your dog to see if that will
distract him from picking up your socks.

Cool! That's awesome I'll try that with my dog if he stops
putting socks in his mouth and stuff.

Cindy, that's what I've been told as well; keep the dog on
 leash/tie
down for about two weeks and slowly introduce the dog to
 supervised
time off leash. My dog was completely off leash by the fourth
 week
home, and I tie him during the night.

Well, maybe I am misunderstanding something here, but when I
 have received
my dogs, I was told to keep them on leash full time for two
 weks; then I can
begin letting them off. I usually have them pretty much off in
 the house by
three weeks to a month depending on their reaction. I always
 tie them at
night. So this is the first time I have heard of students at
 the schools
being told to keep dogs on leash or tie down six months to a
 year. I was
  never told that.
