Julie, I totally agree with you. It shouldn't have to stay on
tie down for a year all the time while not working. We been
working hard every time I notice him getting bored we go to work.

I agree. I can understand and work with a puppy who chews on
things,
but an adult dog should be past that. I also don't think it
should take
a dog 6 months or a year to settle into a new home. I think a
few weeks
is reasonable to keep an adult dog on leash or crated when not
directly
being supervised in a new home, but after that time and gradual
additions of more and more freedom in the house with instruction
on what
is expected an adult dog should be a well mannered addition not a
holy
terror. Sorry I just can't deal with a dog who isn't pleasant to
live with.

Maybe I won't be liked for what I have to say on this topic. I
think a dogs house manners have alot to do with what the puppy
raisers teach the puppys in those first few months. I know dogs
will be dogs, but not all dogs chew everything in sight. Also if
the dog is worked enough, no board, then there is no reason for a
pup to chew on things in the home. We as handlers can influence
our dogs not to chew on things. Like I said this is my opinion
only.

That isn't logical

I have to be very careful about what I leave on the floor as
well.
You could try leaving toys down for your dog to see if that will
distract him from picking up your socks.

Cool! That's awesome I'll try that with my dog if he stops
putting socks in his mouth and stuff.

Cindy, that's what I've been told as well; keep the dog on
leash/tie
down for about two weeks and slowly introduce the dog to
supervised
time off leash. My dog was completely off leash by the fourth
week
home, and I tie him during the night.

Well, maybe I am misunderstanding something here, but when I
have received
my dogs, I was told to keep them on leash full time for two
weks; then I can
begin letting them off. I usually have them pretty much off in
the house by
three weeks to a month depending on their reaction. I always
tie them at
night. So this is the first time I have heard of students at
the schools
being told to keep dogs on leash or tie down six months to a
year. I was
never told that.
