[nagdu] Time on leash or tie-down, was Dogs and instructors

My dog is pretty ridiculous. I have to keep him on tie down or
only give him a little freedom for about 6 months maybe shorter
or longer. Every time I give him more freedom, even on leash, he
puts everyy in his mouth. The other night I pulled two pennies
out of his mouth. Every time I let him off-leash outside to play
him, he's not interested in slay with long he would rather eat
horse manure.

I don't remember being told to keep the dog on leash or tie-down
for
months by either TSE or GDB. Maybe TSE said a month; I forget.
I kept Ben on leash or tie-down for a week or so, then started
letting him
roam with supervision. When I saw he was fine, I stopped with
the leash
and tie-down. I remember the process being the same with my
other dogs.
I don't think any of them spent more than a couple weeks on leash
when
they got home. I kept them on tie-down during the night for a
while, but
eventually stopped even that.
My first 4 dogs lived with me in small places--one-room
apartments or dorm
rooms--so supervising them off-leash was not a problem, but the
process
seems to work the same, now I have a house, though it might take
a little
longer to set them free.
But it sounds like I have to add acceptable house manners to the
list of
things I need to say, that I thought went without saying, next
time I'm
telling my school about my dog needs.
Tracy
Most training programs ask that the dogs be on leach for six
months to a
year because they are going in to a new environment and it helps
with the
bonding process as well as you and the dog getting adjusted to
the new
surroundings. I have worked dogs for 25 years and I just came
home a
couple
of months ago and my dog is on leach in the house and on tie
down at
night.

I don't know that leaving your dog on leash for 6 months will
show your
dog
not to follow you. When you are at home your dog will probably
always
follow you around.

are the
trainers still actually working with you only at home? How

school.

Hi Sarah,
Can you keep your dog on leash with you, then you know what is
happening with him at all times.
This is a problem living with family and taking training, with
a
guide
dog.
One of the things I mentioned to you before you got the dog.
Now you have him, and just keep him on leash so he gets to know
you.
I am also in my second month with my guide, and when anyone
comes to
the door, he is on leash.
I even ask my husband not to open door until dog is on leash.
Then I know I have the control.
Wishing you the best.

They said to just do a strong leash correction but I wish they
wouldn't make eye contact and interact with the dog.

It's an excuse if they are doing this then telling you to "keep
him under control" without telling you how to make that happen.

It's not excuses they told me that the dogs should fet excited
because they have been working with the dogs for the past 6
months. And every time they come they always make contact with
the dog to make him more excited.

Did you talk with the instrutors about it? When I had a similar
problem, I found the dog would work for me in places we hadn't
been before. Be sure you are talking about it.

Motley only wagged his tail at the trainer once when she came
over with some
scissors to cut the hair around his eyes.
We were told to keep the dogs under control.
It wasn't easy at the beginning, but we did it somehow.

Hello everyone,
When you first got your dogs, did your dogs go nuts when they
saw
the trainers? What did you do? Did you let them go nuts and say
hi to the trainers or get them under control?

Hi all,
When I first came home from Pilot with Motley, the trainer and
my
mobility
instructor worked on my area with Motley and I.
My mobility instructor seemed to be familiar with guide dogs
because she and
the trainer go way back.
Anyhow, she was able to help Motley and I along with routes
here
in my
neighborhood, and it's worked out great!
All my best,
Chantel and Motley

I know that lots of these folks don't know much about dog use,
but as they
show us a route, can't we tell them what we need? That's how
I've
dealt with
any here.

too, but, yes, those are few and far between. I know some of
the
schools
offer O and M people the opportunity to work with a dog, etc.,
but I wonder
how much they get to learn in the space of a couple of days.
In
other
words, do they learn enough to be able to help someone learn a
route or to
know what the dog is or isn't dong or the owner is or isn't
doing.
