[nagdu] things on the floor was Re: Dogs and instructors

I fully agree with you, Marsha. Puppy raisers do an awesome job with our
dogs but they still are individuals and do things differently. Some may not
realize the problem they cause when they think it's OK to let the dog eat
stuff off the floor at home like they let their pets do.

One of the problems I've encountered is that some puppy raisers take the dog
for a walk to get it to relieve itself. they walk it like they do their pet
dogs and the guide dog puppy soon learns that it needs to walk for blocks
sniffing along the way and just stopping to go when and where it wants to.
The raisers don't know that we stand in one spot and allow the dog to sniff
and go within the radious of the leash or off a curb on the street as city
folks do alot. I think this causes alot of the problems wioth dogs
relieving when and where wwe want them to.

Same thing for chewing stuff in the house. Some people think it is fine to
allow the dog to have an old sock or shoe for a toy. A problem arises when
the dog cannot tell the difference between your old shoe or sock and the
brand new ones you just boought.

We have an annual guide dog puppy raiser lunch at our blind center and we
talk to the raisers about many of these kinds of issues and how they cannot
alow a guide dog puppy to do many of the things a pet can get away with.
