[nagdu] Nowhere to go?

hey Andrew if I would've been there I could've fought the
wrestler dude. I wanted to punch my brother-in-law in the face
the other day but I didn't want to do it in front of the baby.

To bad you didn't know me! I was a wrestler and didn't stand for
that kind
of behavior from one of my fellow wrestlers! They paid for those
shenanigans!

the thing is allot of the blind community i found was rude and
things
at the school for the blind here in ontario even if there was a
center
here i wouldn't go the school had to much drama there was back
biting
and i was pushed and shoved even a guy who was a restler took
hold of
me and pulled me down the stairs and things.

I to be honest am sick of these so called blind centers and
things it
would be better to just stay and learn things in the regular
school
 system.
so i been through my share of abuse by the blind community.

Yeah but people are rude there and act like immature

of the people there even though they were in their 30's all they
did was drink when class was done. And when we went to the
beach
and the amusement park I got left behind like usual and had to
go
ride everything by myself at the amusement parkstpier. And at
the beach everyone left me at the bar and I had anxiety attacks
all day. The only time I'm happy is when I'm around animals or
 especially on a roller coaster.

Maybe you actually need to talk about what happened. It might
help, and I'd be glad to listen. Do you mean at the IL Center?
Maybe if your experience is bad there, you need to find a place
that doesn't have that kind of memories tied up in it.

Sarah, why do you have to stay there. And earlier, you said
you
thought to go to Los Angeles and certify to be one; yet you say
you won't go away from home again for training. You aren't
 making too much sense.

Sarah, I hate to have to say this, but you need to grow up.
You are going to go away to get your dog, yes? You really aren't
setting your sights very high. The attitude you have about
bettering yourself is so limited, that I fear you might be in a
bit of a rut, and it is really driven by fear. I get that, but
as I have said before, you have to slog through t he fear. I am
sorry you feel that way because there are a lot of really rich
experiences beyond amusement parks awaiting you if you just go
 for it.

I'm sorry you had such a horrible experience. Please know that
 not all
training centers are like that. If you want to give it another
 try,
there are lots of people who can assist you. I'm sure people
on
 this
list would be happy to share their experiences with residential
training. It's not going to work though, if you aren't ready
or
 wanting
to take that step yet. When you are ready all you have to do
is
 ask and
there will be support for you.

  Sarah,

Might I suggest going away to a residential program to learn
 some
blindness skills? It would give you the opportunity to live
on
 your
own, gain life skills, be independent from your family, give
you
 lots of
options for your future and provide an opportunity to have new
experiences. There is always time to get a dog later, or some
residential programs will work the dog in.

A guide dog can do a lot of really great things, but it will
 never be
able to balance your checkbook, cook dinner, stand up for your
 rights,
match your clothes or punch the time clock for you.

  All my best to you,
  Julie

  Hi Sarah.
I wonder why you want a dog, if you feel you have nowhere to
go?

I am old enough to see the glimmer of retirement in my
 future--not soon,
but not impossibly far off, either. But I think that even
after
 I
  retire,
I'll have places to go. I'll still have the usual trips around
 town--the
grocery, diner, pharmacy, shopping...though those won't be
every
 day. I
hope to do a bit of travelling. And to get out and walk,
 preferably
  every
day, just to keep myself fit. I've had 6 guide dogs now, and
 every
  one of
them has done best when they've gotten regular work. Ben, my
 current
  dog,
doesn't require miles and miles a day, and can take one day off
 a week
with no problem, but he still gets squirrely if I don't work
him
 for any
  length of time.
I think my dogs will still get enough work, once I'm retired,
 but it does
concern me a bit. If I felt I really had nowhere to go, or no
 desire
  to go
anywhere, I'd just get myself a pet. But, being somewhat prone
 to cabin
fever, I don't see that happening any time soon.

  Tracy

Dang it now I'm worried. I really have no desire to go
 anywhere.
  I just fel too tired

No, I don't do that. I should, but because I am currently not
going much of anywhere, I've gotten out of the habit. I kind
of
wish I did, and maybe I'll start. That's probably one of the
reasons I won't get any dogs after this one. I don't think
he's
getting a fair shake. I hope I don't change my mind.

His name is Fisher. Let's see. I think they brought him to my
room. We walked around the room a lot. He sniffed me and we
cuddled. At our school, they had us go out on their leisure
 path
with the harness and an instructor attched to him, too, with
the
leash. Then later we took them out to relieve and have dinner.
He mostly tried to keep him close and see what toys he liked,
though I went slow with this. Some dogs, when you first get
them, whine a lot because they hear familiar voices as others
 are
being given dogs by the same instructor. Some are restless the
first night or so when they are with you; I've never had a lot
 of
trouble with that with any of the dogs.

\Hi, Sarah, I am Cindy. You know, it depends on the dog. I am
a firm believer in spending a lot of time in the process of
bonding with my dog, especially the first few days. If the
person who trained you is your trainer, they will look to that
person for a while, but you will start to see a switch over in
a
few days. When you take that dog home, I think the bonding
increases because now it has left all it knows behind except
 you,
so it trusts you. You will have work to do to become a solid
team, but your dog and you will have already begun a strong
bonding that will only get stronger. I think the key is a lot
 of
attention, especially at first and mostly from you, corrections
when you have to, and lots of praise when the dog does
something
  right and well.
