Hi Eve,
Paratransit is the special buses for the disabled that is generally a
door-to-door service that one must qualify for and pay seperately from
fixed-route transit.
Here in San Diego, our paratransit goes within 2 miles of the regular bus
and trolley system. It runs during the same hours as the regular public
service. I generally take paratransit when the weather is bad, I'm going to
be out after dark in a bad area, or don't know where my destination is
located or is in an area without sidewalks (which San Diego has in Mission
Valley and other outlying areas), or if the trip will take hours and
paratransit gets me there alot quicker.
Here, blind folks mostly qualify for the service - especially if you have
additional disabilities. The fare is $4.50 one way trip and $9.00 for round
trip. I generally use it when i need it and mainly use the regular buses.
In SF, I'm not sure if the BART system is the entire transit system of
buses, trackless trolleys, light rail vehicles on tracks, and the subway. I
think most schools give students at least one trip on some sort of trains
and buses while you are in training and the dogs are trained on these before
getting matched with us. At TSE, we get a train at Morristown, ride a bus,
and go into NYC for the subway and crowded sidewalks of Manhattan - Times
Square to be exact! I was impressed with all the gigantic lighted video
signage on the buildings. It is never dark there!
