For me, the answer is no, but it varies from person to person. I had 1
Labrador that worked successfully for me. She was a lovely dog, but the only
one of 3 Labs to work long-term. My other 2 Labradors had poor work ethic,
significant distraction troubles, and the first had terrible house
behaviors. I think I honestly just had bad luck, but those were my Lab
experiences. That said, across the board, Labs tend to work well with a lot
of people. I know of many handlers with nice Labs that work beautifully for
them, so I don't want anyone thinking I'm ttrashing Labs, because I'm really
not.

I'm currently working a female Shepherd, and while she isn't perfect, she
has lovely work ethic. She can be distractable at times, but she's also only
16 months old, so that's pretty normal at this stage. She does have very
solid nerve though along with a great deal of initiative, which is really
great. That said, many people find Shepherds to be a bad fit for them, so
again it all depends on the individual and what he or she likes in a dog.
