[nagdu] airport training

Hi, Julie and all,

I agree with those who use the procedure of putting the guide on a stay and
going through the metal detector first, while continuing to hold onto the
leash, then calling the guide to come through to you. The only trouble I
would anticipate with this procedure is that from what I have heard of the
TSA's new rules, if the dog/horse touches you or you touch the animal once
it comes through to you, that they will have to further examine both you and
the guide. And in my experience, the guide is so happy to be reunited with
the handler after even so brief a separation, that he/she usually can't
resist sticking his/her nose in your hand, licking some part of your
anatomy, or jumping up on you, or in Panda's case, pressing herself against
my left leg in heel position. I guess this just requires more training for
calmness when returning to the handler. But the temptation to pet or touch
the guide when it responds to the "come" command might be just too much for
me. I haven't had the opportunity to try out this procedure, so am just
speculating here.

The hand swabbing, I believe, is supposed to be standard procedure for
anyone traveling with an animal, whether or not it is a service animal, and
regardless of how you proceed through the metal detector. So I don't think
the method of going through the metal detector has any bearing on that.

Best,
Ann

Tami,

You were right. Some people were saying that they put the dog into a sit or
down stay, drop the leash and walk through the metal detector without
holding onto the leash. Others do the sit or down part, but hold the end of
the leash as they walk through.

The original question was if all the programs teach proper airport security
procedures. For me it's the word "proper" that is where the difference
lies. I think all of the programs teach some sort of airport procedure and
I'm sure they'd all say it's "proper". However there isn't exact agreement
on the specific procedures to be used.

I've only ever flown with Belle and I honestly cannot remember what I did.
I can say I would never dream of letting go of that girl's leash.
Not unless I wanted to create a giant kerfuffle. *smile* When I go
through non airport security with Monty, I have him sit and stay, drop the
leash and walk through myself. He's trustworthy off leash. I know he will
come straight to me with no detours. If I was uncomfortable with the
security personnel or if there were a lot of people around that I thought
might mess with Monty, I would hold onto his leash. We don't live in a
highly populated area though, so there are usually very few people at
security checkpoints out here.

HTH
Julie
