Hi Ann,
In 1999, when I got Jake, we used canes to find the shoreline on the 
"country walks" during training.  We did this in 2007 when I got Landon. 
While walking, we just held the cane out of the way and then we'd use it to 
probe in front of the dog to make sure the dog was following the shoreline 
as it was supposed to be doing.  It didn't seem to bother the dogs at all.

That's awful that your brother had to go through all that while training and 
at the hotel.  What about walking into the other guests at the hotel - I 
heard that the school's space wasn't always segregated from the rest of the 
hotel guests.  What a crappy attitude of that trainer - wonder who that may 
have been?  Wow!
